Dr. Esquenazi Speaks With Middle School Students

Dec 04 2015

Alberto Esquenazi, MD, MossRehab's chief medical officer, fielded a wide-range of questions from students at East Norriton Middle School this week.

As part of WHYY's Healthy NewsWorks project, 10 students - mostly reporters for the school's newspaper, the Bulldog Bulletin - peppered Dr. Esquenazi with inquiries about everything from his decision to become a physician, his interactions with his patients, to the ReWalk device he helped develop. ReWalk is an exoskeleton that helps people who are paralyzed walk again.

One student even asked Dr. Esquenazi about the loss of his hand in medical school and his subsequent decision to remain in medicine despite the loss of his dream to be a surgeon.

“It was frustrating at first, but at the same time it was exciting to see that there were new opportunities for me," he told the students. “With hindsight I would say I made a very good decision. And that I achieved what I wanted to, and hopefully I’ve done it right. Sometimes things happen in life that you have no control over, but dealing with challenges is something I’ve always liked. People I’ve worked with have always told me that I can’t sit still for very long.”
