Voice Therapy

Transgender and gender-expansive people seek a voice that feels authentic to themselves - which may include goals around a variety of change. Our vocal therapy program helps LGBTQ+ individuals find the vocal sound that best affirms themselves. Experienced voice therapists focus on varied vocal nuances including pitch, resonance, volume, and intonation to develop an ideal voice

Therapeutic Grooming

Individuals receiving hormone therapy and other gender-affirming care may need to change grooming routines as the body changes. For others, makeup is a powerful tool for gender expression. MossRehab occupational therapists teach skills in makeup application, shaving and skincare through a one-of-a-kind therapeutic grooming program called Groom, Glow, and Grow. Designed specifically for the LGBTQ+ community, each session of the virtual program focuses on different grooming topics including basic makeup skills, skincare during hormonal therapy and how to achieve a  look.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy

MossRehab orthopedic physical therapists offer wellness care to treat musculoskeletal disorders such as tendonitis, arthritis, bone fractures and muscle strains. They also treat the side effects related to nonsurgical and surgical gender-affirming procedures that affect the musculoskeletal system. Therapists trained in gender-affirming care understand the best approaches to obtain optimal outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Wellness Care

MossRehab orthopedic physical therapists treat a variety of musculoskeletal impairments including joint injuries, arthritis, muscle strains, and tendonitis. They also provide rehabilitation after surgeries such as knee and hip replacements.

Care for Gender-affirming Top Nonsurgical Practices

LGBTQ+ individuals who want to align their appearance with their gender identity may practice nonsurgical interventions such as chest binding to create a flatter chest profile. Those who bind may experience back, neck or chest pain due to compression and/or breathing difficulties because of restricted ribcage movement. Our orthopedic physical therapists understand how to treat the side effects of unsafe and/or prolonged binding and can offer education on safe binding practices to reduce potential risks.

Care for Gender-affirming Top Surgical Procedures

MossRehab orthopedic therapists support those in the LGBTQ+ community who are preparing or recovering from gender-affirming surgery in the upper body. Commonly supported surgical procedures include chest reconstruction and breast augmentation.

Pre-surgery

Orthopedic therapists can conduct a pre-surgical assessment to identify pre-existing musculoskeletal issues for resolution before surgery to lower the risk of post-op problems and ensure the best outcomes.

Post-surgery

After surgery, our orthopedic therapists can help patients manage pain without medication, support proper muscle tissue healing to minimize scars and work on restoring mobility and strength. Patients also are guided on home exercises and other practices to help with recovery after surgery and transition into their self-identified genders.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

In addition to providing wellness care for pelvic floor, bladder and bowel problems, our specially-trained pelvic floor therapists treat issues related to nonsurgical and surgical gender-affirming procedures.

Wellness Care

MossRehab pelvic floor therapists are sensitive to the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals during wellness checkups. Pelvic floor dysfunctions such as incontinence, overactive bladders, constipation and sexual pain are treated with non-invasive treatments to resolve and prevent recurring issues to increase the quality of life.

Care for Gender-affirming Bottom Nonsurgical Practices

To achieve an appearance that reflects the desired gender identity, transgender and gender-expansive individuals may practice nonsurgical interventions such as tucking, which presents a smoother profile, or packing (wearing a prosthesis penis) that creates a bulged profile.  Tucking and packing can cause a mix of urinary, testicular and postural issues with lower back pain. MossRehab pelvic floor therapists can offer the right care to address pelvic impairments caused by binding and packing. They also offer self-care approaches so individuals understand how to treat common ailments and avoid future problems.

Care for Gender-affirming Bottom Surgical Procedures

Those in the LGBTQ+ community who decide to make a permanent change to their bodies may elect to undergo a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), phalloplasty (creation of penis), or vaginoplasty (construction of a vagina). A pelvic floor therapist can provide pre- and post-surgical care to ensure the best outcomes.

Pre-surgery

Before surgery, a pelvic floor therapist can conduct a thorough pelvic floor assessment to ensure muscles and pelvic floor tissues are properly functioning and the hip and knees are mobile because these areas are the most impacted by surgery.

Post-surgery

Pelvic floor therapists can offer post-operative support including scar tissue management to minimize its appearance and skin tightness, and stretching pelvic floor muscles to improve outcomes. For specific surgeries, dilation therapy is conducted to improve the elasticity of pelvic floor muscles. Behavioral education outlines nutritional and lifestyle changes to avoid complications such as constipation that can add to pain issues by putting pressure on the pelvic floor.
