Program Focus

This comprehensive Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) medical program will provide multi-disciplinary care to those service members and first responders experiencing mild-to-moderate TBI or concussions.

Based on the national cognitive and mental wellness model launched by the Marcus Institute for Brain Health (MIBH), MRIBH is a community-based clinical outreach program that addresses the brain health issues associated with head trauma that vets and first responders may face from service in demanding traumatic situations.

MRIBH is backed by the long-term experience and established practices of MossRehab in managing patients with TBIs and the transformative research of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute. MossRehab is one of only 16 federally funded Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems of Care in the U.S., making it a center of excellence in the research and clinical care of TBI.

Why MRIBH?

Highly Specialized Care for “Invisible Wounds” Traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress affect nearly 1 out of every 3 military personnel deployed to war zones since 2001. An estimated 30% of our nation’s first responders also experience symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress.

Though dubbed “invisible wounds,” the changes in psychological health that accompany these conditions have a variety of manifestations, such as depression, anxiety, suicide, and substance abuse, impacting not just the Veterans and First Responders themselves, but their families as well.

MRIBH is uniquely positioned to utilize MossRehab’s foundation of strength in clinical care along with innovative research component offered by MRRI to expand and; utilize the integrated care models pioneered by the Marcus Institute for Brain Health to provide individualized plans of clinical care for service members suffering from traumatic brain injuries.

How We Help

MRIBH will provide services in two phases: evaluation and intervention.

During an evaluation, individuals interested in receiving care are assessed through tests and interviews for three to five days to determine if their main concern is treatable. A team of program directors, veteran coordinators, therapists, and nursing and physician staff work to determine a candidate’s eligibility.

During the intervention phase, those accepted into the program are offered personalized treatment as part of a three-week program. Interventions might be cognitive, physical, emotional and/or psychosocial. Family members attend at the end of the program to learn how to provide support at home.

Based on patient needs, team clinicians may include:

  • A physician who is a rehabilitation specialist in traumatic brain injury and experienced with military veterans physiotherapist who understands TBIs and the consequences of concussion psychologist and neuropsychiatrist who provide emotional support therapists of different disciplines (physical, occupational, recreational, etc.).
  • Administrative staff will direct programs and coordinate travel for individuals. At the same time, a nurse monitors their health throughout the program.
  • For caregivers and family members, the MRIBH will offer education regarding the effects of traumatic brain injury, provide access to available resources, and provide the guidance needed to support their loved one while taking care of themselves as well.
