What is Therapeutic Makeup? 

Through GGG, certified makeup artists work with occupational therapists to help patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries learn to apply makeup within the restraints of their impairments tailor grooming sessions to a patient’s condition. For example, an individual with an arm impairment may receive instruction on how to apply skincare products and makeup using a non-dominant hand.

In addition to improving grooming independence, GGG can help enhance a patient’s mood and self-esteem. Instructions are conducted in a tranquil setting with music in the background so patients can relax. The program is offered to all ages and genders. While therapists, physicians and neuropsychologists typically refer patients to GGG services, patients can request to participate in a makeup session.

For members of the LGBTQIA+ community, GGG offers the opportunity for those undergoing gender-affirmation therapies to learn makeup application skills to help achieve their ideal presentation.   

In the future, GGG will expand to support other patient populations throughout the MossRehab network. To support its growth, the program needs the support of sponsors and makeup donors. In addition to receiving donations from Danessa Myricks Beauty, GGG is working with the beauty brand MakeUp Forever for supplies and makeup consultations.
