Dr. Whyte Joins National Academy of Medicine

John Whyte, MD, PhD, director of the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute, has been inducted into the National Academy of Medicine - one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

The Academy, begun as the Institute of Medicine in 1970, recognizes individuals "who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service." The National Academy of Medicine addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine. 

Dr. Whyte was recognized by the Academy for being "an internationally known expert in rehabilitation after severe brain injury, with a particular focus on impairments in attention and executive function, and disorders of consciousness. He helped define the Minimally Conscious State as an entity, developed diagnostic tools to accurately characterize consciousness and conducted seminal clinical trials. His exploration of pharmacological treatments of neurocognitive impairments has provided some of the strongest evidence on efficacy currently available. He is also an innovative methodologist and research educator in rehabilitation medicine, having established an NIH-funded program that trained a generation of leading rehabilitation researchers."

In addition to his work at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute, Dr. Whyte serves as director of brain injury research at the Drucker Brain Injury Center at MossRehab . He has teaching appointments at Jefferson Medical College and Temple University School of Medicine.

Dr. Whyte has received funding for his research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Education/National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Department of the Army and the James McDonnell Foundation. He has also received seed money grants from the Albert Einstein Society and Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute Peer Review Committee.

Dr. Whyte has an extensive list of published research. His work has appeared in such publications as Neuropsychologia, Brain, Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, Neurology, Journal of Neurotrauma, and several others. He has also written numerous book chapters.

Dr. Whyte has received numerous awards and honors for his outstanding research, lectureship, and work as a pioneer in the field of brain injury rehabilitation, from organizations such as the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, and the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania.
