In the News: Support for Young Stroke Patients

Aug 07 2017
The population of young people dealing with strokes has been growing in recent years, changing the approach to rehabilitation for these patients.

MossRehab and Philly.com recently produced a look at MossRehab's support group for younger people who are recovering from strokes.

"Overall, 65 is still considered a young age for stroke," explains Melissa Meyers, OTD, OTR/L, BCPR. "So [having a stroke] is not even on these patients’ radar–not even close. And we found when these patients were discharged, there were very limited resources at their disposal."

Meyers founded the Young Empowerment Stroke Support Group (YESS) to focus on the specific needs of the younger stroke population. The article not only details the YESS program, but it follows the story of one man who faced a stroke at 23 years of age.
