MossRehab Physical Therapist Ali Ladak PT, DPT, recently explained the importance of maintaining a high cadence while running in an article on Philly.com.
Cadence represents the number of steps by a runner in a minute. Optimizing the cadence can reduce energy expenditure and lower the risk of injury. Ladak says a cadence of 160 steps per minute is a good goal for most runners. If you are slower than that, gradually speed up to reach it.
“The most important thing is that you want a minimum and gradual change because that could increase forces on other parts of body,” Ladak told Philly.com.
