Course Description:  This intermediate level course will explore the complex clinical decision process for selecting and procuring manual wheelchairs, seating systems and wheelchair accessories in the adult population with a variety of neurologic disorders who are using wheelchairs for the first time.   A combination of lecture, lab, case presentations, video and group discussions will be used to improve practitioners clinical decision making when assessing, prescribing and fitting of the adult manual wheelchair.

The content will review the process for obtaining wheelchairs and impact of patient diagnosis, prognosis, functional capability, body type and available funding in the process for selecting and fitting a client with manual wheelchairs.   In addition, this course will closely look at two other categories of equipment:  wheelchair seating and wheelchair options / accessories. These two other areas are quite important to understand because they complement and complete the clinical decision making in ordering of the adult manual wheelchair.

Course Learning Objectives:  At the completion of this course the participants will be able to:

1. Explain how the patient’s functional assessment, postural evaluation and key body measurements all impact clinical decision making in selection of the adult manual wheelchair, wheelchair seating and wheelchair options/accessories.

2. Describe in detail the process of prescription and ordering of a wheelchair.

3. Describe three configuration adjustments to either the adult manual wheelchair itself and or wheelchair seating that would allow for improved patient fit/ mobility performance.

4. Identify and define, by observation, three different manual wheelchairs and describe the distinguishing characteristics and indication of each.
