Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS): Enhancing the Teaching and Practice of Therapeutic Interventions

Presentation Overview: This half-day, live webinar will introduce attendees to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living & Rehabilitation Research, (NIDILRR) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, (PCORI) funded Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS), an interprofessional standardized system for considering and defining rehabilitation treatments with respect to their known or hypothesized ACTIVE ingredients. The goals of rehabilitation can range from improvement in function to enhanced participation in societal roles, however, the current methods for describing rehabilitation treatments fail to accurately portray this complexity. A systematic, theory-driven system for specifying the essential elements of treatments is needed.

Use of an organized approach for defining and, ultimately, measuring the quality and quantity (dose) of specific treatments will enhance education, clinical practice and research. The RTSS offers a framework to educate new therapists on essential therapist actions (ingredients) that matter and offers a method to transfer knowledge from expert to novice clinicians. Such a system can enhance the clinical reasoning of practicing clinicians by examining the relationship between the treatment ingredients selected/delivered and the functional changes that are EXPECTED.

Course Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the course participants should be able to:

  • Define key concepts discussed in the RTSS, such as treatment and enablement theories, target, aim, ingredient, treatment component.
  • Identify potential applications of the RTSS for clinical education using materials provided by experienced RTSS educators.
  • Demonstrate how the RTSS can stimulate critical thinking and strengthen clinical reasoning underlying the planning and delivery of interventions.
