About Our Young Empowerment Stroke Support Group

Over the past few decades, the incidence of stroke in individuals under age 65 has risen at an alarming rate. Young stroke survivors may face different challenges than older individuals who have had strokes, including learning to cope with role and life-stage changes such as employment, raising children and driving.

The Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Young Empowerment Stroke Support group (YESS) was created with exactly those issues in mind. YESS offers community-based services for young stroke survivors. Specifically, the group addresses the needs, roles, lifestyles and goals of the younger adult to promote socialization, quality of life and participation in life roles.

Social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists all work together with the support group, providing a multidisciplinary approach to program facilitation that distinguishes it from other stroke support programs in the area.

Our young stroke survivor support group activities includes group sessions on:

  • Driving
  • Working
  • Family relationships
  • Stroke education and prevention
  • Technology and adaptive equipment
  • Communication and socialization
  • Contemporary leisure activities

This young stroke survivors support group is goal-oriented and can serve as a vital change agent for social participation, role engagement, advocacy, empowerment and independence after stroke.
