MossRehab to Hold 48th Annual Camp Independence for Adults with Physical Disabilities

Aug 14 2019

PHILADELPHIA (August 13, 2019) – Once again, MossRehab has invited adults with physical disabilities to enjoy sports, swimming, art, fishing, camp fires, costume parties, music and friendship at the 48th Annual Camp Independence, a week-long, overnight camping program for individuals 18 years of age and older. This year’s program, which will host 29 campers, is scheduled from Sunday, August 18 to Saturday, August 24 at the Variety Club Camp and Development Center, 2950 Potshop Road, Worcester, PA 19490. Approximately 45 camp staff, including MossRehab therapeutic recreational therapists, speech therapists, physical and occupational therapists and camp counselors provide assistance to campers with personal care needs during their stay.

"The value of the experience offered at Camp Independence carries over to a camper's home life as well," said MossRehab's Therapeuic Recreation Team Leader Anne Wieland, who serves as the Camp Independence Administrator. "One way is by exposing campers to activities that they may want to do year-round outside of camp. Another is the friendships that begin here, resulting in get-togethers, year-long communications, and sharing common interests.  Also, the families and care-givers of campers--who provide support in every possible way throughout the year--can get a week-long breather to rest and recharge knowing their loved one is safe and enjoying themselves."

The highlight of Camp Independence for both campers and staff alike is the annual bonfire and concert. Held this year on Wednesday, August 21 from 7:00 pm till 10:00 pm, the celebration features live entertainment, sing-a-longs, refreshments (including s’mores) and the chance for MossRehab employees, supporters and their families to meet campers and learn about their experiences at camp. Camp Independence t-shirts are also sold with proceeds going to the Camp Independence Scholarship Fund which helps to offset the cost ($600) of attending camp.

Camp Independence, which began in 1971, is the only overnight recreation program for adults with physical disabilities in Pennsylvania and is a recipient of the prestigious Recognition Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Rehabilitation Facilities.
