Einstein and Jefferson Finalize Merger

Oct 04 2021

Jefferson Health and Einstein Healthcare Network announced today the completion of the merger of the two health systems which will drive health care forward throughout Greater Philadelphia. By bringing together two prestigious academic medical centers, the expansion of Jefferson Health creates an integrated 18-hospital health system focused on providing greater access to high-quality patient care in our communities and delivering outstanding health sciences education to tomorrow’s health care professionals.

“The culmination of the multiyear process of bringing two great organizations with more than 300 combined years of service, clinical excellence and academic expertise is not just a merger,” according to Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, President of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health. “Einstein and the new Jefferson together represent an opportunity for the Philadelphia region to creatively construct a reimagining of healthcare, education, discovery, equity and innovation that will have national and international reverberations.”

With the addition of Einstein, Jefferson Health will host the largest number of residents and fellows in the Greater Philadelphia region. Jefferson and Einstein will play a critical role in educating future health care leaders and building a pipeline of clinical expertise to serve the community.

Other notable benefits of Einstein and Jefferson coming together are:

  • Seven specialties that are nationally ranked by U.S. News & World Report, including Cancer; Diabetes and Endocrinology; Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Ophthalmology (Willis Eye Hospital); Orthopedics (Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Jefferson Health and the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center at Jefferson Health); Pulmonology; and Rehabilitation (MossRehab).
  • Two Level One and one Level Two trauma centers.
  • Access to the largest midwifery and transplant programs in the region, resulting in enhanced care options for mothers, babies, transplant patients and their families.
  • Ten hospitals that have achieved Magnet status — a highly competitive and national designation that recognizes nursing excellence.

The merger also brings together MossRehab and Magee Rehab, combining their respective strengths with nationally recognized brain-trauma and spinal-cord injury programs.

Together, Einstein and Jefferson will focus on strengthening health care and wellness for patients where they live and work. This renewed focus will help care for the community in improved and innovative ways as well as help eliminate health disparities.

“Finalizing this merger is an important step toward securing and enhancing the future of health care for the communities we serve,” says Ken Levitan, president and CEO of Einstein. “Since we originally announced our plans to merge in 2018, the ongoing crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic further underscores the need for strong, local health care in our region. We are grateful to our remarkable teams of employees, caregivers and community supporters who made this partnership possible.”

Levitan will remain as president and CEO of Einstein while adding the role of executive vice president at Jefferson Health. In this new role, he will help guide the transition and integration efforts of Einstein while exploring new strategic initiatives for Jefferson.

Next, Einstein and Jefferson will begin a thoughtful integration process, purposefully aligning and building upon the strengths of both organizations. Throughout this process, patient access to care at Einstein and Jefferson will remain uninterrupted.
