MossRehab and its research arm recently expanded its volunteer registry to include individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonism.
Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute performs patient-based research devoted to improving the lives of individuals with neurological disabilities. Home to approximately 12 research labs, MRRI researchers study many patient populations across several areas of neuroscience such as cognition, language, and movement. (

Research volunteers are essential to MRRI research. Currently, 2,000 individuals actively participate in the MRRI Research Registry. Scientists use the Research Registry to identify and contact potential participants for their studies.
MossRehab Parkinson Patients Can Join the Research Registry
Including participants with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders within the Research Registry allows a variety of Parkinson’s-related research opportunities to flourish, ranging from increasing our understanding of how the brain works to developing best practices for treatment. Researchers rely on volunteers to learn more about rehabilitation, Parkinsonism, and the brain, which may help improve rehabilitation services in the future for all of those living with the effects of neurological disease or injury.
Inpatients and outpatients across the MossRehab network with Parkinson’s disease or those who experienced a stroke and TBI can help shape future care by serving as research volunteers. Family, friends, and other individuals without any neurological disorder or injury also may qualify for participation in the MRRI Research Registry.
Here’s how it works:
- Individuals expressing an interest in joining the Research Registry must go through an informed-consent process.Registry staff explain Registry participation and answer any questions. All information remains confidential following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) guidelines. Once completed, the volunteer enters into the Research Registry.
- If a Research Registry member is eligible for a particular study, a study team member will reach out to that individual to see if they would be interested in participating. The potential participant must complete a second informed-consent process that details the specific study (duration, tasks, risks, etc.) and, again, provides an opportunity to ask questions.
Research Participants Can Help in Discovering New Therapies
Getting involved in research helps MossRehab patients contribute directly to science in understanding and developing new treatments for people with similar disabilities. Studies may require completing assessments, answering questions about how their lives are affected by a specific disability, and engaging in speech, language, movement, and/or cognitive tasks. Experiments may include interactions with next-generation technology such as virtual reality and robots.
