Course Description:
You may be surprised to learn that Multiple Sclerosis cases are more prevalent in northern states like ours. The further away from the equator, the higher the risk.
It has become common practice to refer MS patients to physical therapy clinics. Research strongly suggests that movement and exercise reduce long-term disability from the disease. PTs play an integral role in managing MS throughout the disease course – at diagnosis, relapse, progression, even in stable times.
No two MS cases are the same, and impairments and function can vary significantly. Due to the fluctuating nature of the disease, physical therapists commonly face varied prognosis and responses to interventions. Responses can vary from day to day – or even within the same day – during a single PT session.
In this interactive on-line session, Dr. Alicia Flach discusses the collaborative role of PTs and addresses the comprehensive management of the disease – from pathology through intervention. You will discover how PTs are uniquely skilled for this role which includes recovery (improving strength, mobility, and balance) preventing falls, managing fatigue and patient/family education. Intermediate content is consistent with post professional education.
Learning Objectives:
- Recall pathophysiology of MS.
- Identify common signs and symptoms of MS.
- Recall common pharmacological management strategies of MS (including relapse/exacerbation).
- Develop appropriate interventions based on case presentation.
- Discuss considerations that impact interventions for individuals living with MS.
- Identify common strategies to manage the unique symptoms of MS (fatigue, heat sensitivity, mood changes).
- Describe common barriers to MS care (health disparities related to race, affordability of meds).
About the Speaker: Dr. Alicia Flach is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina in the Physical Therapy Program. Her primary teaching role is in rehabilitation of adults with neurological conditions and injuries. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from University of South Carolina. Additionally, she is recognized as a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy (NCS), Board-Certified Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Specialist (MSCS), and Physical Therapy Faculty Scholar at the Parkinson's Foundation. Her clinical practice focuses on collaborating with individuals living with degenerative neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, to reach their movement goals. Dr. Flach’s research interests are how physical activity and exercise can help in optimizing movement, such as walking and balance, overall function, and quality of life in individuals living with degenerative neurological conditions.

Requirement for successful course completion: Satisfactory completion of the continuing education units consists of full attendance with monitored electronic sign in and completion of an online course feedback form (self assessment of learning outcomes) and post test (knowledge assessment).

Re-quests received less than 3 days (72 hours) prior to the course start will result in a non-refundable administration processing fee of $50.00 or 50% of registration cost (whichever is less). No shows or cancellations within 24 hours of the course start will be ineligible for a refund. MossRehab will reimburse you the cost of the registration, if we have to cancel a course due to low enrollment, weather, or an emergency situation. We are not responsible for any other costs associated with attending a conference. If you are on the waiting list of a course and do not get in, we will not charge your credit card; if you paid by check we will send the check back to you. In the event that a course is rescheduled we will provide you the option of applying the tuition towards the rescheduled course in lieu of a full refund.
