The course highlights evidence-based motor recovery techniques, neuroanatomy, and movement system deficit.

Course Description
Therapists often make contact with stroke patients within the first 24 hours of admission. An efficient, thorough mobility program is the key to better outcomes.  This in-person intermediate level, two-day course will address physical therapy management of individuals following a stroke. This program consistently receives high marks for its interactive problem solving, exposure to the most current literature and straightforward applicable concepts. The focus will be on assessment, treatment planning, goal setting and progression of patients through the rehabilitation process: from early medical stabilization to management of chronic stroke conditions. This course will integrate concepts of neuroplasticity, principles of motor learning, and evidence-based practice to inform treatment decisions. Topics highly relevant to the stroke population, such as pusher syndrome, neglect, apraxia, orthopedic complications, gait theory and strategies, the hemiplegic UE, and cerebellar dysfunction will be discussed in detail. 

The content of this course is directly related to the provision of physical therapy as outlined by Guide to Physical Therapy Practice Pattern 5D.

Course Objectives:
1. Explain early stroke management and therapy implications
2. Describe potential patient presentations based on the anatomical location of a stroke.
3. Apply current concepts of neuroplasticity and motor learning to treatment selection.
4. Apply movement theory to maximize treatment of gait and movement dysfunction
5. Describe evidence-based treatment techniques for individuals with CVA who demonstrate:
 Pusher Syndrome
 Neglect
 Apraxia
 Upper extremity dysfunction
 Cerebellar dysfunction
 Orthopedic dysfunction
6. Select (3) outcome measures validated for individuals with CVA.

  -New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners
  -New York State Education Department: MossRehab is an approved provider of continuing education credits for the New York State Board of Physical Therapy.

Requirement for successful course completion: Satisfactory completion of the continuing education units consists of full attendance with monitored sign in and sign out forms, and completion of a course feedback form that includes self assessment of learning outcomes.

If you are on the waiting list of a course and do not get in, we will not charge your credit card; if you paid by check we will send the check back to you. In the event that a course is rescheduled we will provide you the option of applying the tuition towards the rescheduled course in lieu of a full refund.
