Motor Control Analysis

At the MossRehab Motor Control Analysis Laboratory - one of the few of its kind in the nation - we analyze muscle function and dexterity. This can be especially useful for patients with central nervous system disorders or brain injuries. We identify the presence and degree of voluntary control a patient can exercise over his or her muscles and movement. For patients with central and peripheral nervous system damage, motor control analysis provides a specific basis for corrective physical, medical, and surgical therapies.

BENEFITS TO PATIENTS AND PHYSICIANS

MossRehab's Motor Control Analysis Lab benefits patients with movement dysfunction or impaired functional activity due to neurological disorders, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis. These studies help physicians identify muscles that might respond to corrective surgery, as well as assess the effectiveness of non-surgical therapies. They can also provide data on the effectiveness of drug therapies and can measure the degree of improvement after treatment. The lab also helps physicians identify abnormalities in a patient's muscle tone, and the presence of spasticity and contracture.

COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES

Dynamic Electromyography (EMG) and Kinematic analysis:

  • Studies four or more muscles during the course of movement
  • Provides data on movement control during function
  • Provides data on passive and active movement
  • Provides quantitative information about movement through
    electrogoniometric measurement

A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE REFERRING PHYSICIAN

All diagnostic studies are conducted by specially-trained physicians and therapists. Study results are sent to the referring physician along with recommendations for treatment. Physicians may choose to refer their patients to MossRehab for treatment, or they may simply use the Motor Control Analysis Lab as an evaluation service. Referring physicians are invited to visit the lab to view their patients' records and discuss study results.
