The Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) sponsors interdisciplinary research aimed at improving human function and adaptation to disability.

Research is an important part of treatment, often leading the way to new advances and innovations in medical rehabilitation. Research activities within the institute help maintain MossRehab’s excellence by attracting the best staff and bringing new medical and technological developments to patients with disabilities.

The mission of MRRIis to:

• Foster theoretically motivated rehabilitation research
• Stimulate operations research aimed at improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of patient care
• Establish education and training programs that foster the philosophy and methods of effective rehabilitation research

Program Focus

MRRI has three major areas of research focus:

1. Cognitive neuroscience/cognitive rehabilitation seeks to understand how stroke, brain trauma and other diseases of the central nervous system disrupt mental processes, and to develop innovative treatment approaches for these problems.
2. Motor control/mobility rehabilitation seeks to understand how movements are planned and executed in healthy individuals to help restore useful movement to people with paralysis, amputation and spasticity.
3. Outcomes research seeks to measure how well individuals with disabilities function after completing the rehabilitation process; ensure that tools used to measure progress are meaningful, and that treatments are effective.
