The Responsiveness Program at Drucker Brain Injury Center evaluates patients who are in a coma, are coma-emergent or who have a questionable ability to participate in their rehabilitative therapies. Program FocusThe Responsiveness Program uses a comprehensive evaluation system to precisely determine a patient’s ability to participate in and benefit from rehabilitative therapies. During the initial quantitative assessment, patients receive attention to their basic medical and physical needs to optimize their potential for recovery. A physiatrist and neurobehavioral specialist or neuropsychologist with special expertise in assessment design and analysis meet with the interdisciplinary treatment team and the patient’s family to identify the clinical questions that need to be answered. An individual quantitative assessment protocol is developed and data is gathered by all team members for three to four weeks. After analyzing the results, further specific treatment recommendations are made to enhance physical and cognitive functioning. Patients whose overall level of functioning improves sufficiently can be referred to the Basic Living Skills Program for continued intensive rehabilitation to maximize self-care, mobility and social behavior skills Special Program FeaturesBased on the results of the initial assessment, drug treatment may be recommended with additional quantitative assessment to establish its effectiveness. Understandings gained about particular sensory or motor problems lead to specific treatment recommendations. For locations, hours and other information, please call 1-800-CALL MOSS (225-5667). |
