Swallowing Disorders / Dysphagia

Swallowing Disorders / Dysphagia

Regain your ability to communicate at the only rehabilitation hospital in the region consistently ranked among the best in the nation, and the top-ranked facility in Pennsylvania.

Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation, a leader in the field of swallowing rehabilitation, is staffed with speech and language pathologists and physicians who specialize in evaluating and treating swallowing disorders. Most of the patients we see have swallowing complications related to neurological impairments such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis.

Dysphagia is a term used to describe a variety of swallowing impairments that can result in the inability to safely swallow foods and liquids and maintain good nutrition and hydration. Swallowing is one of the most complex functions in the human body, yet most of us can perform it easily and without a second thought. When dysphagia occurs it can have a great impact on health and quality of life.

Jefferson patients receive a comprehensive evaluation that begins with a clinical assessment of oral motor function and swallowing function with foods and liquids. After clinical evaluation other diagnostic tests are available as needed. One test that the speech and language pathologists may recommend is a videofluoroscopic swallowing study, which involves an x-ray that follows the passage of food and liquid through the mouth and throat into the esophagus.

Treatment programs are individualized for each patient but often include some of the following approaches:

  • Thermal and sensory stimulation
  • Strengthening exercise programs
  • Head and postural maneuvers
  • Compensatory technique training
  • Diet texture modifications
  • Educational resources for patients, family members and healthcare professionals

Our speech and language pathologists work closely with other health professionals such as rehabilitation physicians; ear, nose and throat physicians; gastroenterologists; dietitians; nurses and physical and occupational therapists. All of these professionals can help enhance the plan of patient care.
